ABOUT US

Our Club At a Glance:

We've been running model trains since 1982 in the heart of Central North Carolina. Founded as a modular layout, we settled into our current home in the mid 2000's. Our layout is freelanced with many scenes from across North Carolina and some of our favorite places. No matter what you model, you can have a home here at the Waynesborough Model Railroad Club!

Why Waynesborough?

We get asked a lot, "Why do you call yourselves Waynesborough even though you're in a town called Goldsboro?" Well our name pays homage to the historic roots of Goldsboro. Goldsboro was initially formed as Waynesborough back in the 1700's. When the town was incorporated the town was renamed to Goldsborough and then eventually once more to Goldsboro. We love paying homage to our community in this way.

  Our Club Over The Years:

Our club over the years has taken many forms, but you'd be shocked to hear that we have portions of our layout that were constructed in 1982. Yes! We have parts of the layout that are over 40 years old. The mountain scene in the front right corner of our layout is original to the original 1982 layout. Our first layout was built as a modular layout that was displayed in Berkley Mall in Goldsboro. Eventually our club was able to move to a more permanent home in the old hotel in town. However, our stay there was not long and we eventually moved into the second story of a building on James Street in downtown Goldsboro. While in this location our layout grew and blossomed! But our club eventually outgrew the space. One of our founding members, Mr. Warren Bishop, saw the problem and offered a solution. He had purchased a building located on West Mulberry Street in town and had a space in the bottom that the club could occupy. So in the mid 2000's we moved, once more, to our current space at 118A West Mulberry Street.

Over time, we had multiple member pass on, and eventually our club fell on hard times. At one point we had only 5 members on the roster. Then the 2020 pandemic hit. Everything shutdown. It should've been the final nail in the coffin that our club was lying in. But, in what should've been our worst year, our club was reborn. Our membership tripled in 2020. 2021 brought further growth and in December we held our first Christmas Open House. Multiple generations of club members came together and put on this open house, including Mr. Warren Bishop who got to witness his and others hardworking pay off once more for an entire new generation.

Since then we have run multiple open house events all throughout the year. Our club remains committed to our local community and educating folks on railroading.

We invite anyone who wants to learn more to visit our club on a Tuesday evening or Saturday morning during our public open house hours.
